This project intended to contribute to an improvement in transatlantic dialogue between trade union workplace representative on both sides of the Atlantic within the context of a joint EU-US action plan Building Bridges Across the Atlantic which underlines a commitment to "fostering an active and vibrant transatlantic community by deepening the commercial, social, cultural, scientific, and educational ties that bind us".
It was officially approved in June 2001 and ran until August 2003. This project was carried out with the financial support of the European Commission.

Aims

To improve transatlantic dialogue between trade union workplace representative in US and European multinational companies by:

1. Organising a series of training workshops which

  • examine the obstacles to the development of social dialogue in certain American and European multinational companies
  • compare and analyse possible European and American trade union actions in these companies
  • develop joint and complementary strategies between American trade union workplace representatives and European Works Councillors with the aim of setting up an effective social dialogue in the US and European multinational companies concerned.

2. Producing a practical guide for future activities

The experiences encountered in the workshops will provide the basis for the production of a practical guide for transatlantic social dialogue. This practical guide will be designed primarily for workplace representatives in multinational companies active in the EU and US. It will be published electronically and available for downloading from the web sites of the two major partners. It will be available in English and two other languages. It will contain four elements:

  1. National systems of information, consultation and negotiation in the member states of the EU, as well as the principal characteristics of social dialogue in Europe at intersectoral, sectoral and workplace level
  2. Systems of information, consultation and negotiation in the United States
  3. Possible themes for cooperation between American and European workplace representatives, as well as examples of existing good practice
  4. A series of activity sheets that could be used in future workshops to enable participants to make an inventory of new themes for cooperation and ways of putting them into practice.
